Charlotte HS senior, following in MLK’s footsteps, makes difference in children’s lives worldwide

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One day every year, students across the United States leave their backpacks at home and carry their books to school.

It’s called No Backpack Day, and it raises awareness for the millions of children around the world who walk miles to school carrying their supplies because they can’t afford a backpack.

But one Charlotte high school senior is doing more than just raising awareness. Mongai Fankam says she has been following in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s footsteps since she was in elementary school, and hopes to inspire people much like him.

“I give back and MLK was all about service,” she said.
